The Rules Behind the Numbers
- Full-time, Monday to Saturday — disability services, home care and day care employees: time and a half for the first 2 hours, double time after (cl 28.1(a)(i)). Social and community services and crisis accommodation employees: time and a half for the first 3 hours, double time after (cl 28.1(a)(ii)). The step applies per occasion, which is why the calculator asks for a typical day.
- Part-time and casual — overtime starts past 38 hours/week, 76 hours/fortnight (cl 28.1(b)(i)) or past 10 hours in a day or shift (cl 28.1(b)(ii)) — 12 hours where a shift wraps a sleepover by agreement (cl 28.1(b)(iii)). Time and a half for the first 2 hours, then double time.
- Sunday overtime is double time from the first minute; public holidays double time and a half.
- Overtime vs penalty rates: overtime rates replace shift premiums and don't apply to ordinary hours worked on a Saturday or Sunday (cl 28.1(b)(vii)) — those attract penalty rates instead. If you're pricing ordinary weekend hours, that's the other calculator.

- When does overtime start for part-time SCHADS employees?
- Past 38 hours in a week or 76 in a fortnight, past 10 hours in a day or shift, or past 12 hours where a shift wraps around a sleepover by agreement. Hours between the contracted and those thresholds are paid at ordinary rates.
- Do casual employees get overtime under SCHADS?
- Yes — the same weekly and daily triggers apply to casuals (clause 28.1(b)). How the 25% casual loading interacts with the overtime rate is stated clause-by-clause, so for casuals we recommend checking actual shifts rather than a flat estimate.
- Is a Saturday shift automatically overtime?
- No. Ordinary rostered Saturday hours attract the 150% penalty rate, not overtime. Overtime rates only apply to hours beyond the ordinary-hours limits, and clause 28.1(b)(vii) makes them a substitute for, not an addition to, shift premiums.
